IIRC, just before RCA announced they were phasing out
CED, it was mentioned (I think in an interactive videodisc
publication) that RCA planned to add PCM Digital Audio to
CED VideoDiscs.

It's been over 25 years since I read this, but I think RCA
discovered that there was additonal bandwidth available
above the FM video carrier which could be used for PCM
format Digital Audio (the PCM audio would be in addition
to the FM mono or CX FM Stereo analog audio).

Anyone have any more information about CED VideoDiscs
or CED Players with PCM Digital Audio?

I heard that digital sound was planned for the VHD videodisc format also, which was out in Japan for a few years, and planned for release in the US but never made it here. In fact, audio CDs could have been displaced by AHD, a digital audio-only format based on the same technology as VHD.

I have some pre-recorded 8mm videotape movies that say they have digital sound on them, but I've never seen a machine that can play them. The regular audio track on them is mono, when played on a standard stereo machine.

It would seem unlikely to me that there would be any available bandwidth at the upper end of the recorded passband. RCA was having a difficult enough time getting a frequency response up to 9.0 mhz for the FM video signal in the inner diameter of the disc. This was quite state of the art at the time. There might have been enough room at the lower end of the passband; about 500 kilohertz and below.

I found one reference to (probably PCM)
Digital Audio added to CED VideoDiscs:

1984-03 Videography Magazine Page 62:

[Jon] Clemens: We expect to put digital audio
on our discs, but we expect to include video
with it.
