i know an SGT 250 is supposed to use a 154100 cart.

my SGT 250 needs a new cart and the worn one has a 149000 sticker on it.
next to the trap door where the cart sits is another rca sticker that says 149000 too.

early production screw up?

Both cartridges will work, but the older one (149000) is usually noisy when playing a stereo disc. I noticed some odd noise out of one channel particularly- kind of a hissing that comes and goes according to what's on the soundtrack. Someone said there's a rubber part on the other stylus cartridge that gets rid of the noise, and it's possible to make one for the other cartridge.

Sounds like someone put the wrong label on the machine if it says to use the 149000's, or maybe someone swapped out a part from a mono player.

Jesse
seems you hit the nail on the head.
John from CEDATUM wrote me and said RCA did issue a bulletin stating the factory installed the wrong label but the correct 154100.

Your player may have a replacement arm assembly, unless you're sure that it is the original part. I replaced the arm in my SGT-250 with one from a Zenith VP2000 (same as the SFT-100); it's the same as the original SGT-250 arm, except that it is labeled for a 149000 and it has a different black plastic stylus cover latch. I swapped out the latch with the one from my faulty SGT-250 arm, but I didn't worry about the label. If you got your player second hand, perhaps someone else did the same thing that I did. Hopefully they changed out the black plastic latch. On the older style latch (pre-SGT-250), the embossed arrow sticks up and there is a finger catch to easily open the latch. It can catch the stylus access door on the top of the player, causing the arm to get stuck towards the end of a video.

a follow up to my earlier post

recently i shipped both carts to CEDatum.
their conclusion was that both styli were good but needed cleaning and one flylead need to be re attached.
the $$$ amount of the repair was small but their honesty and integrity was enormous:>)
i recommend them highly.

Cool. I agree completely with your comments about CEDatum - they are certainly a great blessing for us CED fans. Good to hear that it was just minor stylus issues - changing out pickup arms (or other major repairs on these machines) is a pain in the rear - getting the stylus refurbished is no problem.
