| Ok, I replaced the belts and it was playing great, but, the reverse did not work then I turned it over to reattach the top piece of the player then turned it back over put a disc in, and now the stylus arm just goes backwards! even when it reaches the end of the line to the position it is in when you put the disc in, the motor attempts to keep pulling the stylus arm backward. So, what is the problem? |

I've had that problem several times before, but each time it was caused by something different. What model is it? If it's an SFT or SGT series (or something equivalent, even a Toshiba-built unit), I would first check the stylus to make sure it's properly installed and that the magnet (above the stylus tip) is straight and intact. If it's messed up or out of alignment, it can fool the sensors and make the player think the stylus is running forward when it's not, thus trying to compensate by driving the tonearm motor backwards. You could possibly have to replace the stylus too; that fixed my problem one time.
If it looks okay, check the metal poles/sensors in the tonearm where the stylus tip goes into. They too should also be straight and aligned. I've had to adjust those one time on a player, though I would strongly recommend leaving them alone unless you're sure that's the problem.
If you think the stylus and tonearm poles/sensors are okay, you'll most likely need to do some adjustments to the little knobs inside the player. It's been a while, and I don't remember which adjustment is the right one, but it should be one of the servo adjustments, either the one on the tonearm, near the plug-in cable, or one on a circuit board. There's a certain adjustment (again, I regret that I do not recall exactly which one) that balances the drive - if too far off one way, the player keeps fast-forwarding, and if too far off the other way, it keeps rewinding. When you get that control in the ballpark, you can fine-tune it by pressing the rewind and fast-forward buttons and adjusting the control until rewind and fast-forward go the same speed.
Other models, like the SJT and SKT are different. If you have one of those that's acting up, it's probably something burned out - they use a microprocessor to drive the tonearm at a constant speed without the use of the sensors utilized by older models. |
