I recently have repaired our family RCA SJT090 CED player. However, the picture is 'garbled' and their is no sound. I have tried this on channel 3 and channel 4 without success. After reading several posts, I am wondering if the stylus needs to be cleaned/replace? Or is their a circuitry problem.

Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like the stylus to me. You might just need to clean it. If you follow the directions inside the player, you can access the stylus and check the tip on it. Now, if your picture looks real snowy, like a weak channel on an antenna broadcast, it could be the RF modulator. I don't know how knowledgeable you are on electronics, but the circuit board has several test points and their functions are outlined by the datasheets attached to the player's top cover - if you find the AUDIO and VIDEO test points, you can tap off of these and run them into your TV if it has the red, white, and yellow RCA jacks (the audio can be fed in the white and/or red jacks, and the video in the yellow jack). The brightness may be off, but this would at least give you an idea as to whether the garbled picture is with the stylus or the RF modulator.
Now, if you're just getting a lot of vivid color splotches flashing all over the screen (and maybe a low-pitched rumbling sound), I can tell you now that it's the stylus. But if you do find that it's the modulator, then you may consider removing the modulator (or at least the cable jacks) completely and just installing audio/video RCA jacks, wired to the test points mentioned above.

Thanks for the info. I cleaned the stylus and the picture is clear and there is sound.
