I have a Sears 934.54780150 player that is giving me trouble. After you insert a disc caddy, the turntable raises the disc and the arm drive (with the stylus) moves across to start playing. The trouble is that the stylus does not stop at the start of the disc. Instead, it continues across the disc to the disc center. It then pauses for a few seconds and then returns to the rest position. The stylus acts as though it is not touching the disc. I have tried 3 different styluses and have had the same results. The last stylus had been evaluated by CEDatum.com and was given a rating of B-. I would almost swear that the disc is not being raised high enough. I have changed the loading belt so I can rule that out I think.

Once in a while, the stylus will touch the disc and the player then plays the disc.

Anyone with any ideas?

Do you see anything other than L (LOAD) when you are trying this and I assume you have the top off?

The player uses the Hitachi chassis and was not made by RCA so there is no L(oad). I do have the top off during all of this testing.

I was wondering if the turntable may have settled due to age or shipping? If so, I would like to know how I could raise the turntable back to its correct position.

Of the 9 "Hitachi" players I have, 5 are working and 4 are in various stages of repair. I have 3 RCA players with 1 working and 2 are "off-line".

I just got a Realistic CED-1 player in the mail yesterday. It was shipped to me double-boxed. The inside box is the original Radio Shack box. The player inside has the original cardboard insert in the disk caddy slot. The player included the operating manual; but, lacked the wired remote control. I am not too concerned about the lack of a remote control as I have 3 of them. The seller claims that the player works; but, lacks the stylus. I have 7 of them so that does not worry me either.

When Josh (Ketonic Dude) sent me my 300 I believe it had the shipping screw in it. That is probably a good thing.

As to the table not rising, that is an issue, as the player is effectively not engaging the disc physically and if it makes no contact then it should be acting in the same manner as no disc being in there and it will go to the end and shut off, like the return/reject on an semi or automatic phonograph. Because there is no optical sensor to guide it the player has to rely on the signal from the stylus. So if your belts seem to be fine or even new you need to look at pulleys and gears. Gummed up gears or broken teeth, pulleys not moving right and other broken things are what to look for, much the same as you would for other old audio/video gear.

35 years doesn't seem long but I know I'M old now Shocked

At this point in time, I think it would better to shelve this player. I tried to play a CED and the player makes a grating noise. The noise is coming from the back where all the gearing is located. I was hoping to save this player; but, it looks like too hard a job now. I will keep the player as a part machine in case anyone wants something from it.

That is the way it goes (sigh).

You'll get there, Rome wasn't built in a day.

They had to fight wars and build aquaducts in between.

I also have the same Sears player and am looking for some parts. If you are looking to part out a machine I could use a couple parts for a Realistic player and a main board for the Sears player. I wasn’t paying attention and broke a corner off when it was apart. I like this style of player since they are quiet, smooth and play well.

Would you be interested in either/both players? You can have either/both for the shipping cost.

Certainly! I hate to see these machines go to the dump. Are you going to the workshop in Indy? I could pick them up there. If not, I can sure pay shipping. It would be to 58201.

You will have to wait a little while before I can ship either one. I have to find 2 boxes that can accommodate either player. Since I have a spare wired remote for the CED-1, I will include it and the stylus with the Realistic player.

The Realistic player works except that it makes a loud noise as the stylus moves quickly as in moving to start playing a disc or returning to its rest position. The noise seems to be generated by a small worm gear turning against a plastic gear, The electronics work well.

Did you have any luck finding boxes for shipping those players out? Let me know how much shipping charges are if you could. Thank you again. Saving the world one CED player at a time!

Well, you are in luck. I did some searching around and found 2 boxes that will fill the bill. One was used to ship a Wards player to me so it should be okay. I just have to find the necessary packing to protect the Sears player. The other box was used to ship a CED-1 player to me. I will need to find or buy another box so I can double box the player. (The first box looks a little rough so I decided that double boxing would be better.)

Send me your mailing address to etd607 at yahoo dot com. I will notify you as to the mailing cost on this thread.

I buy my shipping boxes at UPS store I think they were 22 x 22 x 12 they worked perfect for shipping ced players. Place player in kitchen trash bag then use peanuts for packing material. Never had one damaged during shipping. The 12 inch height is a little tall so I shortened it to the proper height.

cedwaechter:

I will be shipping the Sears player to you first. Once that goes through, the Realistic player will follow. I will post the tracking numbers on this thread.

I did get your address with no problem.

cbertra2:

I should have the pulley to you by week's end. It depends on how things go removing it. I will post the tracking number on this thread.

I did get your address with no trouble

Don't send me any players, where did that come from. I am just sending you 3 belts and a pully when I receive your pully. The last thing I need is more players. I am selling all my players and parts in the near future.

I received your e-mail and I assure you that I will not send you a CED player or any other type of player for that matter. I will only send you the old non-grooved pulley and a check for $30. In exchange, I expect a grooved pulley and 3 belts.

Who will replace you as a source for grooved pulleys for the Toshiba players?

I mailed the Sears player to you this morning. Shipping cost is $48.98. The USPS tracking number is 9114-9014-9645-1508-1626-42. (Let me know if this tracking number works. I am having a problem reading the numbers.) I will be shipping the CED player this coming week. Enjoy.

It is etd607 at yahoo dot com (same as my e-mail address).

When I mailed the box, the postmistress said it would take 5 days before delivery. (I dread to think what the cost would be for priority mail).

Payment received, Thank You.

Let me know how the 2 players withstood their trips. The Sears player I boxed and the Realistic player was boxed by an office supply store. (I had to go to the store as I did not have a box big enough for the player:s box.)

What did you think about the original Realistic box I packed the player in? (I did not have a place to store the box so I thought: Why not put the box to good use?)

Did you find the wired remote for the player?
