player came today... i put 2 belts in it and a new stylus, and it doesnt work, i tried a few different things and it wont read the disc needless to say im pretty frustrated with this shipping debacle...

the player all but fell out of the box when i picked it up off my porch

this is exactly how it was left in my porch

you can see it was tossed around because it was very poorly packed

some how the shipping lock screw that holds the stylus carrier was partially in place so theres that...

load belt was bad

some of the goopers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WakCOPrFWI8

here is the youtube video.

to top it off the remote end broke off in the player... awesome...

That is too bad about your player.
Is the player a Sears 934.54780150 model? If so, I have one that works the last I tried it. The only problem with my player is that someone placed something heavy on the top in the past which slightly bent it down in the front. When you insert a CED, its label scrapes on the top of the entry slot. I have no need for my player and would gladly send it to you after I do a check of its functionality. All you would have to pay me is the cost of packing and shipping.

Of course, the above is predicated that your player has a good top. Can you insert a CED with no difficulty or scraping?

Let me know

Not too sweat. I have an Hitachi remote that I could let you have for $20. I know it is not a Sears remote; but, it will work with this Sears model as I have tested it with my own 150 player (the one I bought in 1983).

Think it over and post your decision on this thread.

well in that case, i just may take you up on the offer! let me talk to my old lady about it Smile she was the one that wanted a player with the wired remote. how much do you think that shipping would be to hartford?

ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO ADD TO THIS POST;

i do not blame the person i got this from at all, let me be clear that this machine was dropped off at a business that specifically packs and ships things, and we were assured that it would be shipped appropriately, but apparently that was not the case, so in no way is this the fault of the member who i got this player from, he wanted it to get here in one piece more than anything, and i know he is bummed about it, but life goes on, and we both learned a lesson in this Smile

Okay. I will check out my 150 player to make sure it is still working today. Just be sure you know, the player will not have a stylus. I will post my test results tomorrow.

If you could, please see if you can get a weight on your player. I do not have a working bath scales here so I cannot get the player's weight. If you get the weight, I can find out the shipping cost.

Your experience with the player you received worries me. I was going to have the 150 player packed up for shipping by a local office supply store and have it shipped by Fedex or UPS. Maybe I will have to pack it myself in order to feel confident that it will reach you with no incidental damages.

At least you've never had a vintage cassette deck nested in butcher paper or a turntable packed with newspaper...the first was a shipper's packing store and the second was I think free...at least the turntable wasn't broken any more than it already had been. Although the packing place started with a completely working cassette deck and it had no EXTERNAL damage, much less internal, a belt fell of or something in the drive broke and it's a chore to get in there and find out.

I had a receiver packed with carpet pad once, but it worked.

usually i pack something with an apology because usually they are hard to get into, or they are filled with packing stuff like peanuts or bubble wrap, i have a huge roll of plastic wrap i use as well to keep water out or... whatever outside elements...

Sorry to disappoint you; but, the 150 player I have is not functioning correctly. When I insert a CED, the turntable spins up; but, it does not raise up to the CED. The loading belt looks okay. I have been able to get it to raise the disc only a few times. When it does, the stylus starts to move over and then stalls after maybe one inch of travel. At this position, the stylus motor spins; but, the belt slips.

If you are still interested, you can have the player for parts or possible repair. My offer for the Hitachi wired remote is still $20.

Let me know.

To answer your question there, all Sears appliances were coded that way, especially Kenmore, I think it also identifies the suppliers.

That was a great bit of sleuthing, Tony and you really saved a nightmare...

Might I state again, NEVER let a 'packing store' just blindly put your stuff in a box without any care or consideration for what it is, they are lowest common denominator and often charge a fortune, even those with names of a major carrier attached. Study it yourself and pack it yourself.

I'm not blaming the sender either, it was just a bad experience and valuable lesson.

The best thing about this is that you are a true mechanic, Tony. Thanks for this video, it's an invaluable resource to CED users.

you are correct. all of this could have been avoided if the player was just packaged properly. my problem is, the guy i got it from didnt have the means to pack it. why are there shippers if you cant trust them?
it was shipped from "shes the shipper" and when i got her on the phone her careless tone and attitude caused me to report her to the BBB.

now i have to figure out why the digital display glitches, and why it only plays in black and white

I kind of know what you have experienced. This week I won the BIN on a Hitachi VIP1000. I sent a message to the seller to cut a piece of cardboard and insert it into the caddy slot. Well, the time between order confirmed and order shipped was less than 30 minutes. Such a short time implies that the player was already boxed and my message to the seller was ignored. I just hope that this VIP1000 is as sturdy as another VIP1000 that I got in mid December. It did not have the cardboard inserted and yet the player worked perfectly after I replaced the 2 belts. I swear that the sellers are either too busy or do not care to read messages from the buyers. The sellers could save themselves some grief if they did.

This is typical nowadays and they do it because they are afraid that somebody will complain to eBay if something happens despite. The burden is almost all on the SELLER according to eBay. The 'eBay guarantee' thing is a blessing and a curse.

If they still had the long gone transit screw to secure the player it would help.

FYI: The VIP1000 has no transit screws that I know of. A cardboard insert serves to keep the stylus arm from moving during transit.

The VIP1000 does have a shipping screw that is in the tracking arm. I have shipped quite a few of these players and I always install the shipping screw. The plastic or cardboard insert keeps the lowering mechanism in the up position during shipment.

Okay, I stand corrected. It has been so many years since I have unboxed a factory shipped Hitachi player that I forgot about the shipping screw. In the case of the VIP1000 that I mention above, it would not matter. The seller is not interested in inserting the cardboard let alone a shipping screw.

Would you happen to know what length and thread the shipping screw would be for a Hitachi chassis player?

Yesterday, I got a Fedex shipment of a second Hitachi VIP1000. I opened the box today and found a player surrounded by 3 layers of bubble wrap. I unwrapped the player and put on my workbench. I went to remove the cover and found a strip of Magic Tape placed over 2 of the screws. Written on the tapes were the words "Warranty Seal" followed by someone's initials. I thought to myself: After 37 years, I think the warranty has expired. I removed the screws and opened up the player. I found the loading belt looking normal as was the arm drive belt. I touched the loading belt and it fell apart. I picked up one of the pieces and it turned to goo between by fingers. The arm belt was also goo even though it looked normal. The problem I have now is how to clean the goo out of the pulley grooves. That is where I am now.

I had sent a message to the seller to insert a piece of cardboard into the front of the player. Since the time between the order and shipping was about a half hour, I figured that the seller did not do what I requested. Well, he did insert the cardboard just as I asked. Good seller.

More later.

I found the best thing for cleaning the goo out of the pulleys on the SKT 90 and SJT 100 was ammonia. It really did the job, and fast.

Ammonia is water based so it could not damage any plastic parts. The only problem is the smell. If you can stand the smell, ammonia is a possible goo cleaner.

Nail polish remover is mostly acetone which is considered a "hot" solvent meaning it can dissolve a variety of plastcs. I would steer clear of the remover as it maybe too dangerous to use inside a CED player.

Goo-gone maybe usable as it seems to be less "hot" than acetone. I have used Goo-gone in the past for removing label residue and it has worked very well. I have never used it to remove belt goo so I have no experience with it for that use.

I prefer isopropyl alcohol.

Each to his own.;
