PostPosted: Sun Dec 24, 2017 11:07 am    Post subject: Help with an Hitachi AVC08U. Reply with quote

Back in June of 2011, Rixrex advertised that he had some Hitachi AVC08U switchers/converters for sale. I bought one back then and have kept it knowing that some day I would be buying an HDTV and would be using the AVC08U with my CED players. Well, the day came a year ago last August when I bought a Sony Bravia 1080 HDTV .Some months ago I decided to get the AVC08U out of storage and do some experimentation with it.

To make a long story short, I found out that I could not use the the AVC08U's remote control. I did not have the keypad mapping for the remote. I had no idea what key did what. So, I am asking if anyone would have any idea which key on the remote does what on the AVC08U? (It has been so long that I do not remember if there was ever a keypad mapping diagram that might have come with the AVC08U).

Any help would be appreciated.

PS: The remote that came with the unit is a universal remote that was programmed by rixrex (I believe). It is NOT the original Hitachi remote mentioned in the owner's manual.

I have used the AVC08U with a Laserdisc player and the AVC08U does a very good job of up converting the composite video to HD so I know that the unit does work.

We had that brand of ultra-slim Hitachi TV that used the AVC08u as the channel selector and input switcher for what is basically a monitor with only HDMI inputs, but we sold it with the TV. The original remote might be the way to go if you can't figure out the remote you got. The original remote is Hitachi CLU4981S. Looks like they are around $24 from most online sources I see, and the user manuals for the unit which explains the original remote functions are still online. That AVC unit is pretty expensive now, so that's not a bad price for the remote I guess. I wish we'd have kept the unit and remote because it was a great upscaler and also would do the same to analog channel 3 or 4 for the old VCR. You can still use the other remote for something else maybe, if it's a universal or learning remote.

Thanks for the remote info. I have the owner's manual pdf for the AVC08U. In it, there is an explanation of the remote control including the keypad mappings. All I ned to do now is buy the remote control.

Again, thank you for the above infomation as I do not think that I could find out the model number of the rmote very easily.

This remote from Amazon is supposed to work with the AVC08U:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N5XBGXO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The price is reasonable at $14.95.

When I get the remote, I will test it and post my results here.

FYI: This remote is 2 day shipped if you have Prime.

Seems like the difference is that one will only control the AVC tuner box and the original will control additional devices.

That may be true. The remote from Amazon will only work the AVC08U in my setup. I live in an area without over the air digital TV broadcasting so it does not matter to me if the remote can control the AVC tuner. Also, all of my players (CED, DVD, BD and VHS) have RCA output jacks which I use. I do not use the RF coax cable for signal transfer (Not good quality).

I will say that the AVC08U is unique in that it has analog and digital tuners. I cannot think of another device with such capabilities.

Analog & digital tuner is another reason why I wished we kept the unit, but we couldn't sell the TV without letting it go. And now they are pretty pricey. Hitachi also made another AVC unit called AVC01u, that apparently is the same thing, just a first generation. They also made a unit AVC50 which used DVI output, and had DVI in and VGA/PC in as well. We've had that one too with an even older Hitachi TV set. When they went with the ultra-thin series, they didn't have room to include the tuner capabilities within the sets.

I actually have 2 AVC08U's. The first one I bought in June 2011 and works. The second AVC08U I bought a few months ago. I did not realize the two were the same until I pulled the first AVC out of storage and saw that it was the same as the second AVC. Oh well, misteaks happen. The second AVC looks like it has been through a small war. The case has numerous places where the plastic has been bent and broken. When I get a chance, I will test it to see what condition its condition is in. (Maybe after I get the remote this Thursday).

I have a Sony Bravia 1080 set and it does not have a tuner that I know of. It has 2 HDMI inputs and a component input. If you want to input a composite signal, you connect the composite cable to the green cable on the component input. Don;t ask me how you input a component signal and a composite signal into the set. I am trying to determine if I really need the second AVC. Right now, it seems superfluous to me.

Interesting as I never knew a Sony set to not have a tuner. What model is it? It must have a special circuit that senses the signal in that green input and determines it to be either component or composite. The two terms are so similar most people mix them up. Composite has all signal information in one single output, and I remember them by using the S in composite for "Single" output. If there's no RF (coaxial antenna) input, then there would not be a tuner. If I recall correctly, the AVC unit also has cable TV specific tuning as well, having these = NTSC/ATSC/8VSB/64QAM/256QAM

I just checked my Bravia and it does have a tuner. (I will now self-flagellate for2 hours, LOL). I just have not used the tuner. The model number is KDL:-32W6000D.

When you press the Input on the remote, you get a dropdown menu with these inputs from top to bottom: TV, HDMI1, HDMI2, Video, and Component, I am no sure if you can have Video (composite) and Component hooked up at the same time. I don;'t use component video (at least not yet) so I have not tried the 2 together.

I got the remote control for the AVC08U today so I will be doing some testing tomorrow.

Yes, that's a smart tv with tuner according to specs. Also the video input is a hybrid component/composite input with a detection circuit, so you can only use one or the other at a time. But that doesn't matter if you use the AVC unit which can handle more inputs. Let us know how the new remote works out.

I tested the remote and it seemed to send ON/OFF commands to the AVC that I got in 2011 and then quit. I replaced the batteries and there was no response from the remote and thus the AVC. I guess I will have to return the remote.

I tested the AVC from 2011 using an LD player and it converted the 480 signal to HD with no problem. The picture looks quite good. The AVC that I got a few months ago shows nothing. It maybe that the input on the latter is not set to composite and thus the AVC shows no picture. A replacement remote may solve the latter AVC's problem.

As I recall, the AVC unit only has an on/off button itself on the front, and there's a light that will go to red for off and blue for on, or something like that. The remote is needed to control all other functions. You can check the AVC unit somewhat by manually turning it off and on and watch the light. Once on, and hooked to the TV, you can test the remote functions additionally as I recall you'll see some on screen displays even without an input item running. I think it takes some time to "boot up" when turning on.

I have ordered a new remote from remote barn. I plan on returning the other remote to Amazon as soon as I can figure out a way to do it. In the past, all you did was notify Amazon that you wanted to return an item. You then boxed up the item and waited for the UPS driver to come. He/She had a label that was put on the box and the driver would then take it. Now it is more complicated. Now, you either drop the package off at a UPS store with a label that you print, have the store print a label and you drop the package off, or you take the package to your local post office with a label you print off. The closest UPS store for me is about 45 miles away which is not handy. My printer is not working so the USPS office is not a viable solution. I will work out something or eat the cost of the remote.

The remote from remote barn has no effect on the AVC from 2011. At this point, I am running out of options. The paperwork that came with the remote says that the remote is a direct replacement for the factory remote. There is a variation on the remote. To change inputs, you press the ANT button. I have not tried to change the input as I like the composite video input that the AVC is currently set at. I am going to have to do more research on this.

More later.
