|
|
As most US HDTVs can display PAL-format video without any conversion needed, I've gradually been obtaining equipment to play those formats. I have a PAL CED player on the way from England with about 3 discs, and I have 3 that I bought from sellers in the US. I've collected every regular US title already; I don't know how practical it'll be to do the same for PAL format discs but we'll see how that goes. I at least want to get the unique titles, stuff that hasn't been released in the US, even though the PAL discs I have were actually made in the US!
Ebay prices seem to be rather high, and shipping really seems to kill it being as much as $30 to the US. I've bought Blu-Rays and DVDs from Amazon UK without paying TOO much for shipping, but I don't know how things work over there. Is there a way to do this affordably, or should I just wait until I get a chance to actually go over there? _________________ Videodisc and stereo sound- there's no better value around! |

Also wondering how many of these discs stayed in the US? I don't know the story behind the ones that I've got already that came from here, as to where they were bought originally and how they ended up back here. Maybe there's a bunch stored somewhere that someone can't play that they'd want taken off their hands? _________________ Videodisc and stereo sound- there's no better value around! |

Hello Jesse,
I too am collecting some of the PAL discs. Just like you I thought it unpractical to try to get them all so I am mainly looking for ones that have different cover art or are stereo in PAL format but only mono in NTSC. I have made a couple of connections in the UK that I get most of my discs from and sadly, yes about $30 a disc is average. I mainly watch ebay to try and see what covers of certain titles look like but even on ebay they are usually few and far between on all but the most common ones. I was trying to make a page on the forum here devoted to getting artwork posted for all the PAL discs. But I still have not got around to it yet.
Here is a little sample to wet your whistle

Those are just some screen shots I took off ebay discs. I have the full images on my computer still. I also have about 30 discs of my own that I have pictures of, as well as another 30 from a friend in the UK and I know someone else in the UK with 200 discs that I should be able to get images of too. I think there was somewhere in the neighborhood of 429 PAL titles or something like that, so I am close to having cover art of most of them, provided there are not a lot of duplicates. I was also told that Music discs generally sell for more over there vs. just movie discs. So factor that in too when looking to buy certain titles. I will have to work on this PAL page since there is more interest now.[/img]

Josh, if you could break those images into sections it would help...to get the pictures on a 1600x900 screen you have to decrease the size to the point where the type is microscopic. _________________ A New Vista of RCA Victor COLOR! |

I NEED those "Videostars" discs! The prices on Ebay will set me back a lot but I'll likely just pay it if I can't find them anywhere else. I'm (FINALLY) graduating college this week and close to getting a good job so I'll hopefully have more money to spend on this stuff!
I went for getting all of the US titles just because when I started collecting they were so cheap compared to laserdiscs or VHS tapes at the time. Paying more for UK discs I'll have to be more selective, but will have to at least get my favorites or things that aren't available at all in the US- plus there's a few American movies with alternate titles like "All the Marbles" is called "The California Dolls" over there. _________________ Videodisc and stereo sound- there's no better value around! |

Is that better Steven? For some reason it seems to work even though it still shows my HTML, lol.
Jesse, I agree. The first time I saw the video stars discs I knew I had to get them. I am hoping to get one soon as I have a fix on one. I already have the California Dolls, it must have sounded more fun to those Brits, |

Fits at a size I can read the text at and clearer looking too. Nice collection indeed. _________________ A New Vista of RCA Victor COLOR! |

| Jesse, I figured since I can't really collect every title of PAL discs, I'm going to collect pictures of the cover of every PAL disc. So far just going through ebay and my friend Andrew I have 172 covers out of a total 272 titles. I emailed my other connection over there who has about 30 of the ones I am missing and is going to send me those pictures shortly. Then only about 70 left to go. I will upload them to photobucket and make a thread with the images, or if anyone has room on a server I could make a web page that has links to each title like how Tom has the US title database set up. It will be nice to have a reference for future collectors to see what all the PAL discs look like. |

That's a cool idea! Maybe that will be a future update to the main site, similar to the laserdisc archive site. _________________ A New Vista of RCA Victor COLOR! |

The player finally came today and seems to be in good shape, BUT- I can't plug it in! The plug on it is huge- I have a PAL laserdisc player that I thought was from the UK and I have a power transformer for that, but the plug on that is a lot smaller and won't fit! I went back to the place I bought that transformer at hoping to find one that would work but they didn't have any, and looking online I'm confused as to exactly which one I need. What's everyone else here using? _________________ Videodisc and stereo sound- there's no better value around! |
