I picked up a Zenith vp2000 player and it works mostly but the color fades out and gets all wonky every 4-8 seconds. Tried several titles and same issue for all of them. Here is a video of what I am talking about :

The odd thing is that the sound doesn't go out with the image. Just the image goes out. Any help with a diagnosis? New the this and getting my sea legs with these machines

this happens when the turntable is spinning too fast or too slow, sometimes it is because the turn table drive belt is slipping, the turntable spindle might need lube, or the turntable synch plate gap is off. there is a little disc you can print off that you can put on the turntable and under a fluorescent light if the lines stay still the turntable speed is fine. ill have to see if i can find a picture somewhere...

The turntable is changing speeds. It keeps thinking the speed is not right, then adjusts to the right speed......constantly. Only repair I've been successful with is to take a salvage turntable platter from a donor and hope for the best. Notice it never loses synchronization....a quirk of the RCA system. changing the turntable isnt a guaranteed fix if the sync plates arent aligned properly

I've had that problem with other models using the same type assembly (Sears, RCA SFT-100). Seems like one of the former RCA technicians once posted that if the magnetic ring on the bottom of the turntable (which I didn't even know existed 'til he mentioned it) can get weak and cause that (it's part of the sync mechanism mentioned above). But from my experience, a failure of the sync mechanism usually causes the picture to be constantly messed up. As mentioned above by other members, belt problems or lack of lubrication can cause the turntable motor to have trouble keeping the turntable up to speed. When this happens, the sync mechanism will try to keep it synchronized, but after a number of seconds, it will finally lose sync, then regain sync, only to lose it again after the same number of seconds (which is what you seem to be experiencing). Try lubricating the bearing and try a new belt if you can find one. If that doesn't work, then try the sync alignment.
