Tilt your ear to it and tell us what the motor sounds like. _________________ A New Vista of RCA Victor COLOR! |

It may be the head itself. Possibly a cleaning would help. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe after a while the head starts to get smooth and when that happens it's unable to grip the tape properly. So it'll still move and do what it's supposed to mechanically, but it can't grip the magnetic tape and move it. |

Those models have plastic gears and other parts that can become fragile and break.
It depends on what is wrong. Does it eject okay or do you have to lift it out with the lid off? Is the tape being pulled out of the shell and wrapped around the heads as it should be?
This search query will probably help you a lot.

I spent over $300 to repair a really nice turntable once. When you adopt 25+ year old gear that's what you face. It could be a really good thing to learn to repair your own equipment.
It didn't matter to me that I got it for $7.50 at the local auction.
You need to ponder if you are going to be really interested in your hobby. It's been almost 20 years since Betamax decks were discontinued as I recall. Labor is also probably the largest cost, ignoring the availability of parts. Take the example of vintage stereos, tape decks in specific. Many of the classic models, the ones with the qualities and features that we still desire the most are often 30 years old. Heads and other specific replacement parts are not available for many of them new and you have to rely on sets broken for parts or sheer ingenuity.
None of that is unique to vintage stereo equipment. Every product has a lifespan and becomes an obsoleted/abandoned device or format at some point. Sometimes you have to improvise.
It's not likely that you'll find an early-mid 1990s VCR in pristine condition, untouched by a repairman. Belts go kerplooey, parts break as they could be expected to.
Unfortunately, it does cost $100 to fix a broken $10 item. Be glad it's not a Studebaker. _________________ A New Vista of RCA Victor COLOR! |

Check to see if there is an idler drive belt on the underside of the chassis.
If there is one, chances are it's bad, considering the age.
It is also possible for the capstan motor to have a problem, such as circuit trace damage caused by leaky SMD electrolytic capacitors. Whether the motor runs may be checked by seeing if it runs when using any of the transport functions (FF, REW, PLAY, etc.)
If memory serves me, the SL-S600 is a newer, more cheaply built machine compared to older Sony models. Decks, such as the SL-100 or the SL-HF900, uses a reel table assembly employing an idler mechanism whose idler pendulum was driven by its own direct drive motor.
The SL-S600 might be using an idler mechanism driven by the capstan motor via a belt instead.
If the belt is bad and/or if there is a problem with the capstan motor, that may explain why the machine is not winding the tape into the cassette upon ejection, among other issues.
Other issues that may afflict the SL-S600 may be cracked plastic universal joints on both the cassette carriage drive motor and the mechanism advance motor. A universal joints is fitted onto the motor shaft and are supposed to drive a worm gear which, in turn, drives the mechanism. Cracked universals may allow slippage, which can prevent the motors from driving their mechanisms properly. |
