| I installed a new stylus and now when the needle sets down it takes off in rapid forward. It displays a picture with sound for about for about 1 second then the needle jumps forward to catch up. It does this until it reaches the end of the disc then goes back home. I put the old stylus back in but it still does the same thing. |

Hey there:
I experienced something similar to this when I was fooling around with the kicker adjust pot (if I remember the name correctly) on the stylus arm. I believe that this adjustment changes the threshold by which the stepping motor is engaged as the stylus is pulled towards the inside of the disc. If set too high (or low, depending on the correct point of view), the stepping motor would engage too frequently, and the result was the stylus jumping all over the disc.
Of course, this was on an SGT200. If this was a J/K line player, I have no idea; I've since learned not to play with things unless I had a genuine need for doing so.
Anyway, I hope that helps, and for those who know better, feel free to correct me; I'm rather curious myself. |

| Any luck with that player yet? I agree that the kicker adjustment may be what needs to be adjusted. I think that some styli don't always have the magnet in the exact same position, and since the magnet is involved in the kicker operation, the magnet position could certainly affect the kicker operation. I remember having this problem when installing a used 15400 stylus in a player that was supposed to take the 14900 stylus. I adjusted the little poles in the tonearm to accomodate the different stylus but then had to adjust the kicker pot to stabilize the tracking so that it wouldn't "run away". But once I got another 14900 stylus to put in the player (since the 15400 stylus, which was heavily used, was just a temporary solution), I had to readjust the kicker pot again. It's a pretty sensitive adjustment, and even if it looks to be stabilized, the kicker pot may still be a little off. I recommend testing the visual search, both forward and reverse, and fine-tune the pot until both reverse and forward search work at the same speed. Of course, if you're using a 15400 stylus in a tonearm that specifies 14900, you may first want to try a 14900 stylus. And again, this is assuming that the player is not an SJT or SKT (or a Japanese unit) - I also don't know how to fix a run-away problem on those. |

So, if anyone still follows this very old post please help. I have a problem with my player that sounds like this one - it only plays at 1 speed - fast forward.
So, what is the "kicker adjustment pot" and where is it?
Thanks. |
