Hello. I recently picked up an RCA SJT 400 I won on eBay from the post office. I loaded a disc and have sound and picture... but there's a galloping sound that happens when the movie is playing. I recorded a video so you could hear it for yourself but I don't know how to upload videos here. I have heard that sometimes the disc sits too high or too low and you have to adjust it... how do I do that? Do you think that's what this could be? It seems like a possibility. It is constant and steady.
I should probably clean it up anyway. It looks pretty bad. I mean, good, for a 30+ year old electronic... but... I intend to restore it to close to new and give it to my sister. |

We don't have that capability here-it's an older forums board version but many of the videos we post are through out eBay accounts.
Turn the TV audio down and determine if the sound is coming from the mechanism or a circuit first. You can put your ear to the player and determine that. _________________ A New Vista of RCA Victor COLOR! |

Absolutely a low turn table, a quick adjustment will fix it! Follow the directions on the link I provided above! _________________ I dont own

The bottom of my player has the brass nut... I tried to give it a turn and it didn't want to give... Is it normally a tough turn? Cause it wasn't budging at all. I'm afraid I'll break it if I get on it much harder. _________________ RCA SJT 400 |

Yep don't tighten that too much! There is a small hex screw inside of that to adjust! You need an Allen wrench for that. _________________ I dont own

i believe the allen screw is 2.5mm, the hex nut is a jam nut, so all you have to do is loosen the jam nut, and rotate the hex screw like 1/4 of a turn at a time until the noise goes away, if you put it too high it will ruin the disc and the stylus. make sure when you tighten the jam nut back its only snug and not super tight
also it sounds like it is lacking lubrication at the bottom of the turntable stem, there is supposed to be a tiny flat disc that is a spacer between the adjustment screw and the turntable spindle, often these get jarred loose in shipping and can cause this problem. i had a sjt300 new in box never used and it made this noise, and it just needed lube on the turntable stem where it rides on the washer atop the adjuster nut, so make sure to lube it before you put the turntable back in _________________ (2)Sears 274 & 934(80150,10&11350), sft100, sgt250, sjt 090-400, vp550, VDR3000, VP2000 & 4000

You guys are rock stars - Thanks again!
The SJT 400 is my favorite player... I fixed that one for my sister, and you might remember the guy I bought this one from had ANOTHER one, but it was broken. I feel confident enough now that I could probably make it run and have a 400 of my own.
Side question... which player would you think gives the best sound and video quality?
My grandparents owned a tv sales and repair shop back in the 70's and 80's. They had the BEST stuff at their house. As far as I know... the 400 was the top of the line unit. Seeing it today, it seemed about on par with VHS.
Honestly I'm not complaining, I like the character. I just wonder what the media was capable of. _________________ RCA SJT 400 |
