For a while now, I have wondered why British PAL CEDs are longer than American NTSC CEDs, and why they use different playback speeds in revolutions per minute. Can any one explain exactly how this works? _________________ RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA

PAL has 100 more scan lines than NTSC (625), wider bandwidth and scans at 50 Hz (50 times a second) which matches their electrical system (50 Hz instead of our 60 Hz).
The speed explanation is around here and on the CED Magic main site I'm quite certain but I know it's related to the requirements of the old PAL system-not really so old, 1967 or so but that was 48 years ago anyway which is almost as old as I am.
If the original Marconi/EMI System A (405 line monochrome or even a colour version) had still been the standard in the UK, I'm not sure if it would have mattered or not, but I also know that multi-standard TV sets and accessories wouldn't have been as inexpensive and it was better to adapt CED for PAL.
It would have DEFINITELY been murder rolling out CED across the rest of Europe though, given the number of variances to PAL and still other formats at the time. _________________ A New Vista of RCA Victor COLOR! |

That was very interesting. Is the old PAL system still used in Europe any more? I am also familiar with another old system in Europe called SECAM which would have been impossible to market with CED. I have also heard that newer televisions play video in multiple video standards, but the electrical specifications are still the same for their countries. _________________ RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA
