I've seen some storage fails that can result in broken discs, warped shelves, and other unwanted phenomenon, lol. So here is how to build a simple yet sturdy shelf with 2x4's. First get yourself some lumber.
You will need 10-2'x4'x6's, a sheet of 4'x8'x1/2" osb or particle board, 2-1"x1/2"x8' pieces of furring strip, and you'll also need a 1lb box of #9 2/34" construction screws.
You will also need tools, tape measure, drill, saw, pencil, ruler or square is good.
First thing you need to do is lay 4 of the boards down like so,
Then measure and cut 4 different boards in half so that's 3ft.
Then measure and cut 2 different boards into 16" sections, you should be able to get 4 sections from a 6' board with a little to spare.
So now you should have eight 3 foot boards and eight 16 inch boards as well as the four 6 foot boards you laid out to start.
Now you want to take one of the 16" boards and screw it to the bottom of one of the four 6 foot boards you layed out to start with. Try to line it up square in the corner as possible and put one screw in it. If you really want to prevent your boards from splitting you can pre-drill the holes but personally I didn't care.
Then once you get the other side lined up put a single screw in that one too, like above. Then measure 15" up from the top of the board you just put on, that is where the bottom of the next board will go. Like so...
Secure another one of the 16" boards using one screw and repeat the process.
The idea is to make a ladder looking thing like this. It helps to put the bottom board on first with one screw, measure up to the next board and put that on with one screw, then the next, and the next, all on one side, then connect the top 16" board to the other 6' board first, that way it is all square. It also helps to have a square. Once it's all squared away you can put in the screws on the other side and then I usually put in a second on each side as shown. You want to repeat this to make 2 ladders.
Next you want to stand the two ladders up to face each other and connect them with one of the 3' boards as shown. Again, one screw in one side and then line up everything on the other side and put one screw in there. Then do the top one next to make everything square, it does help to use a square too. Then finishing putting the 3' boards on that side like so...
They should be lined up like this on the inside.
Then flip the whole thing over and do the same on the other side.
The idea is to make an interior ledge all around the inside of the shelf like this.
Again, it helps keep it square if you do the bottom first then the top, if you work your way from the bottom to the top you could get a crooked shelf.
Once they are all on there you are almost done. Stand it up and get that sheet of particle board out.
The shelf should look something like this. I used the cheapest 2x4's they had $1.50 each I think. So there are some gaps like this but it won't matter much once the top of the shelf is covering it. I also tried to put all the bad sections on the inside like this so they would be covered up.
Next, it works best to measure the interior of each shelf one at a time and cut the particle board one shelf at a time to get a better fit. You can really use any thickness of particle board you prefer depending on how sturdy of a shelf you want. I find 1/2 is a good medium.
Once they are on it should look like this.
Don't forget to stay hydrated if it's hot out, lol. My son was helping.
Then take that furring strip we talked about. I think it's 1" by 1/2" and they come 8' long. Just measure the length of the shelf top you cut and cut the furring strip to that length.
We are going to take it and put it on the back of our shelf on top of the shelf tops to hold everything down and it also creates a backstop for when you slide discs in. Like so...
Then just put a screw in each edge and one in the middle. That will keep the shelf top from going anywhere and discs from sliding out the back.
Like so...
And so...
Then on my shelf that is going in my garage there is a floor drain so the floor slopes slightly downward. So I've had to take a small section of the furring strip and attach it to the bottom front of the shelf on each side so the shelf stays level.
Here is the completed project next to the first shelf I made.
Here it is loaded up, but...
It kinda looks like I need yet another one already.
Well that's about it I guess. If one wanted to they could make the shelf longer, instead of the 3' boards you could use 4' or 6' but the longer you make it the weaker it becomes and will start to sag in the middle. I just chose 3' because you can just cut a 6' board in half and viola, easy peasy. Well let me know if you've got any questions. Thanks. |

i agree, the shelf i have in my garage is a little less than double the length and it bows a little... _________________ Sears 274 & 934(80150,10&11350),sft100,sgt250,sjt090,100,101,200,300,400,vp550, VP4000!

Those are great, and look rock solid! Your son is The Boss with a Hi-C koozie that has a mug handle!
Let me know when you're free, still would like to pick up a player and rummage through your awesome collection! _________________ If you always do what you've always done, you're going to get what you've always got.

| Hey Mayor West. Thanks, they are very sold. Could probably hold 3 times the amount of weight. Should last virtually forever. If you wanted to come sometime this week to check stuff out that would be great. The wife and kid are going away with grandma for the week so I have the whole place to myself for the first time in...ever! I was hoping to use the time I'm not working to start sorting and cataloguing my collection. I think it would take far too long to alphabetize everything so I'm just going to create a Excel spreadsheet and put the name of the disc and where it's located. I'm going to name each shelf I have A, B, C, etc. then each cubbie 1, 2, 3, etc. So if I need to find A Walk Through the Universe for example I would just do a search on my spreadsheet for the title and it would tell me what shelf and what cubbie it's in. That way I only have to search through 50 discs rather than about 2,000. But I'm guessing it's still going to take me close to a week just to get that done, you're welcome to come over any day and snoop around. Thanks. |

Awesome! Southbound and down! I'll call and line up schedules with you, thanks! Also, do you mind if I bring my player and maybe putz on it together? I am all for some bachelor time myself.
PS My wife loves arranging our many disc collections and goes alphabetical by genre. But only alphabetically for animation (her silly husbands stuff) because I can't louse that up. Usually what I pull I leave in a stack for her to return them to file. Peace is kept, and love reigns supreme! _________________ If you always do what you've always done, you're going to get what you've always got.

| I only have between 1-200 so I just used wood screws and drove 3 or so on each side of an already existing cabinet. I place them sideways with the label edges out and keep them vertical. |
