Ok, after cleaning the belt goop, and transferring one of the break-away gears from a second machine, I fired it up. It took the caddy in, ejected it and played better than I expected for how dirty it was. Half hour into my 3rd disk the image slowly got, well, not snowy, but with with slightly colored horizontal lines, sort of like when you had to fine tune an on-air tv station. Needle or circuitry problem?

First thing to check is stylus. Sounds like it may be dirty. Either change it with another known good stylus or send yours to CEDatum for proper inspection and cleaning. They are not expensive and worth it.

I was hoping it was more needle based. I did pause it a couple of times and ejected and re inserted the disc in the hopes that the cleaning pd might brush the stylus clean. Luckily, I do have a second stylus, though it is un tested, and I'll give it a shot. Of course, I should be fixing the near pristine 300 I got a month or so and not the parts machine I just got (that works). I just wanted to try out the next level system, and even with the problems, it seems to play the discs with less skips than I see on my sgt 250.
