Ok so apparently there is a way to adjust the height of the needle on a SJT400, anyone know how? When I got my 400 the needle wouldn't read anything so I took the stylus from my 200 and that worked just fine but would start about 6-12 seconds in on both sides. I was told that trying different stylus's could fix that. Well I took the stylus from a 100 and it wouldn't read at all either even though it worked just fine on the 100. I was puzzled. I emailed John at CEDatum and he suggested I adjust the height of the stylus. I will ask him how if nobody here knows but I just thought I'd post this if anyone else has the same problem. I searched and found nothing about the topic so here it is. I also had John check the original stylus I got in the 400 and the result was that it was an A- stylus in working order so there's no reason it shouldn't have worked in my 400. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

I've never heard of a stylus height adjustment, but have had to adjust the turntable height sometimes to get the stylus to work properly.

The turntable does have a specific length for the stem to be, but in general, it has to sit about 1/32 of an inch above the panel underneath. This topic covers that adjustment:

http://www.cedmagic.com/tech-info/repair-solutions.html#dragging-turntable

But it doesn't cover what happens if the turntable is set too high. What I've seen in actuality is that the stylus will not operate properly and you get no play in that case. This is probably worth looking into.

I'd adjust the turntable downward until it starts to scuff against the bottom panel, then I'd follow the instructions to move it upwards 1/32 of an inch, and see if it played then.

Something interesting about your situation is that one stylus did manage to work. I too have seen this even with turntables set too high, but the sound and picture are of a lesser quality than they could be.

A few years ago John of CEDatum gave me a special stylus that he had made that had a extra long fly lead to use on a turntable that was adjusted to low. I never had a chance to try it out cause I didn't have a player with that condition. I tried it on one of my Toshiba players and it didn't work very well because the turntable height was correct.

It includes the 12-page CED-size brochure and sub-displays on microprocessor and groove technology. The column of four CEDs are the foam store displays rather than real discs.

Here's a closeup of the microprocessor display:

Apparently you are correct Rix, I pulled the platter off and the thrust washer was missing. Also like I had been stating before the rubber or foam padding around the edge of the platter was missing, these are most likely the cause of my stylus not reading the disc. I've ordered a replacement thrust washer and turntable complete with padding and will have a go at it once it arrives. Can't wait to get my 400 working again.

Yes, I usually find it stuck to the magnet on the turntable underneath.
