amen.

at first i didnt check them because a majority of the ones i had came from someone face to face, but the ones i get from ebay tend to have a pretty good fail ratio... i really cant wait to finish my collection im tired of getting duds and wasting money ):

I didn't check until Fury suggested to do so. Even so, I rarely get discs from ebay that fail.

I do get quite a few that need pre-play to work properly because they've been sitting so long, so I don't consider those as failed discs. I even got discs that I had to play several times to get it to play well, but they eventually did.

Sometimes a disc will barely play and have many video/audio dropouts, and it's assumed the disc is suffering from groove compression, when it isn't. This is why I always run a pre-play when I see problems on a disc, then recheck to see if the dropouts are being reduced or eliminated.

I'd say it's a good idea to get an inexpensive SJT 090 or SJT 100 just for pre-play of discs only.

yep, until my 100 my arrives 090 will have to do. i like my 090 but it has no rewind and thats a big deal for me... im gona put a clear cover on my 100 and use it for a pre-player. but before i ever stick one in a player i pull it to inspect it... i rarely give up on a disc, but some cant be unscratched...

That is why I have in my CED room, 5 monitors, I pre-play 90% of mine. And it is true, I use a cheaper machine on the ones that look rough. It really doesn't matter that much, the worst disc I have gotten in quite some time was sealed! It must of been at the bottom of some stack of sealed discs. Who knows?

I use the 090 for preplay without it hooked up to any set. It's just in the closet plugged in.

When a disc has skips and dropouts, I just stick it in the 090 and run through both sides while doing other things, so no need for the rewind. Then review it on the main players hooked to the TV.

You can also use an open 090 for disc inspection if you remove the stylus. Just load the disc and visually check it but you will have to unplug the player to stop the disc from spinning. Even an inoperative, unplugged player will do this for you if you manually load the disc. Just one way to not mistakenly touch the disc.

Can also be very easily done with a no good SFT/SGT player but you have to remove the top electronics board to get a good view of the disc.
