Here on the frequently asked questions on the cedmagic.com web site, there is a question about the unused sides of CEDs. It says that there may be something on the dead sides, but the rest of the answer did not make sense to me. I am also curious as to whether any one has tried to watch these sides of CEDs, and what happened, or if they had anything on them. I know that Laserdiscs have material on the dead sides; I have watched some of them on You Tube.

From my experience, my SJT-200 player will not play back side 2 if all of the movie was contained on side 1. The player goes to put the needle down and then moves the needle back to the parking place and the digital display is "UL". I speculate that there may not be any grooves so the needle does not pick up a signal.

By the way: How many grooves are there on one side of a CED?

the best way to see if there is anything is to see if there are daxi lines, if the player doesnt see them it wont play the disc i think

Well it is curious how Tom talks about how to use the J/K player to play these groves yet makes no mention of discovering anything on them, so chances are if Tom never found anything there is nothing to find.

I always check the unused sides when watching a disc for the first time, but have never found anything. You would think that with CED having been marketed to the less technically-savvy people, a message saying they were playing the wrong side would have been helpful.

daxi is digital auxiliary information, its the lines on the disc that go from the center outwards, they give the player minute information and stuff for the number display, and also i believe j/k players read the daxi and if it doesnt advance ( due to a bad disc ) it will automatically advance the carrier until it reads daxi information again, if there isnt any daxi on the blank side of the disc, the player will reject the disc after reading -- on the number display
