I'd love to get some friendly discussions going here. Seems like the forum has been rather dead latley. So please discuss. Some topics...
What was your first big CED score!
What's your favorite player?
How many discs are you up to and are you trying to collect them all?
What should we do with all the On Golden Pond discs?
How much would you pay for A Walk Through the Universe?
What's the most expensive disc you've bought so far and how much did you pay?
Feel free to post your own questions and lets get some discussion going, that's how we all learn. Happy hunting out there! |

Well here's my answers:
What was your first big CED score!
Always have had CEDs in the house since Dad worked at RCA, but 1st lot I got myself was a big mess. Bought them from a fellow two states away and only got half of what he said he had. He wouldn;t return messages after that.
What's your favorite player?
Used to be the SGT 200 because of that nifty lever, but since I got a 400, it is now that one.
How many discs are you up to and are you trying to collect them all?
We have about 1500 so far but many duplicates. Not trying to collect all titles released. But plan on doing that with HD DVD.
What should we do with all the On Golden Pond discs?
Don't give them to me!
How much would you pay for A Walk Through the Universe?
Nothing, since I don't need it.
What's the most expensive disc you've bought so far and how much did you pay?
Most expensive was Zombie at $69 and I returned it because it had disc damage, compressed grooves from wrong stacking. It later sold for $12, and I got a good Zombie in a $36 lot with several others.
I actually have paid more for certain laserdiscs than any CED. |

Thanks for the response Rixrex. I rather enjoy hearing other people's thoughts on the topic. It seems that first CED experience for most people is always the hook that reels them in. I had never even heard of or seen a CED up until about 3 years ago. I was at a local thrift store and stumbled upon a copy of Airplane. A buddy was with me and he as well had never seen or heard of such a thing. He ended up buying it because he liked the cover art on it. I went home and looked it up to find out what it was. I was mistified that they could get video from groves like a record so I had to learn more and did several hours of research. A couple of months later I was browsing Craigslist and came upon a lot of around 170 discs and 2 players, the first time I saw the listing it was $200. I thought that sounded like a lot of money so I didn't bother with it. Eventually I saw it again a week or so later for $100 but it was about a 2 hour drive away and I was working a lot at the time so I waited. Eventually I saw it again for $50 so I had to inquire about them. Turns out they had belonged to the gentlemans father who passed away and he was basically just trying to get rid of them. I explained to him where I lived and he said he would actually be passing through there over the weekend and could deliver them to me. So that was my first big lot and the first CED's I ever bought.
The rest of my topics,
What's your favorite player?
My Sears 934./250 is my favorite player but my SJT-400 I just aquired will receive some considerable playtime once I get my remote in the mail next week. As for my Sears Player, I paid $20 for it at a electronic's repair shop, in full working order. Now I just need to find a remote.
How many discs are you up to and are you trying to collect them all?
I currently own about 1,000 discs, 800 of which are different titles in my personal collection. I would like to own all 1700 some day. As for HD-DVD I just recently got hooked on that, and Laserdisc too. I think it would be neat to own all the HD-DVD discs, I currently have about 200, and about 50 laserdiscs...half of which I just picked up at a thrift store today for .49 cents each.
What should we do with all the On Golden Pond discs?
Well I think a stack of them would make a pretty good boat anchor.
How much would you pay for A Walk Through the Universe?
Arm...Leg...whatever it takes.
What's the most expensive disc you've bought so far and how much did you pay?
I think for most people Zombie is one of the most expensive. It has really shot up in price latley going for $100 plus. I got lucky and found one in a lot on Craigslist so it cost me less than a buck. As for the most expensive disc I've bought, I Spit on Your Grave was $30, although I bought several others with it and he gave me a price break on the lot so you could consider it a little less than that. The most expensive one I've bought by itself would have to be Back to the Future when I had just started collecting. I think it was $21, otherwise I just bought a couple of the interactive discs in box for $20 each and I got the Holocaust set in box for $20. But I'm hard up for Friday the 13th Part 3, 4, & 5 right now so I'd pay over $20 each if I found 'em.
As far as laserdisc go, $10 was my most expensive buy there. I'm more of a CED guy and personally not a big LD fan so I don't like to spend more than a buck or two on any one title.
Well I hope this has been insightful and entertaining and I can't wait to read more responses to this thread. Thanks all, and happy hunting out there. |

So Ketonic, what's up with you 400? The one that you said had no felt on the turntable, but I said the picture looked like it had something there.
Also, I have Friday the 13th parts 3, 4, and 5 - extra copies. Send me an email using the little EMAIL link, not the PM link, and we can see if an agreement is possible on those. Thanks! |

RJ, I never opened my SJT-400 back up to investigate further. It was quite a job getting that ribbon cable and plastic peice in just the right spot when putting the faceplate back on so I didn't really want to pull it all apart again. I'm sure when I get some free time in the near future I'll pull the back cover off and check it out. But from what I could tell that lip you saw was all plastic and the black you saw was what was left of the foam strip from the glue that was holding it on. But the player works as it should for now so I'll let it be until I get time to mess with it more.
Tony, I'm sure I've probably asked before but what model Sears player do you have, the 934./150 was it? I have the 250 and it's my favorite. I just saw someone listed one of the 934 model Sears players on ebay but it's non-working. If they didn't cost so much to ship I would probably buy it just to keep on hand for parts. Also if I had known you didn't have a copy of On Golden Pond I would have sent you one in your package that went out today. I've got Gandhi's and Golden Ponds coming out of my ears. I think I've given away like 3 copies of On Golden Pond already. Well anyways, thanks for the input. |

What was your first big CED score!
My first score was about 125 CED’s. The best score I ever got was about a month later, 600 CED’s and 3 players for $100.
What's your favorite player?
I’m very happy with my SJT 200.
How many discs are you up to and are you trying to collect them all?
I have about 700 CED’s. I used to have around 1000. At one point I wanted every CED, but recently I have been downsizing for space reasons. I still think CED is a great collectable.
What should we do with all the On Golden Pond discs?
Funny enough I have only come across only one copy of OGP & I no longer have it. Haha. The CEDs I find more than any other are: Gone with the Wind, Fiddler on the Roof, & Star Wars.
How much would you pay for A Walk Through the Universe?
Not very much because I’m not interested in it.
What's the most expensive disc you've bought so far and how much did you pay?
I spit on your Grave & Texas Chainsaw $20 each. I found Zombie $1. |

Thanks for the response Husker. 600 discs and 3 players for $100 that's an amazing score. I think it's so strange how people come across different titles more than other people come across different titles. I was just reading about how Tom was rating how common and uncommon the discs are and he said he went through about 80,000 discs in lots and etc in order to collect them all and he used that data to rate how often discs appeared and etc. as well as some other information he gathered. I think he also said Star Wars was one of the most common ones, as for myself I've got through about 1500 discs and only come across 2 copies of Star Wars.
So what was the straw that broke the camels back when you decided not to collect every one? Was it just the space issue or was it too overwhelming? I too have questioned myself on several occasions if I should kill the dream and just collect the titles that I want. With more and more collectors it seems and better and better access to discs titles are more available than ever but this also means prices are higher than ever. Being as broke as I am it's hard to see all these discs that I need on ebay and the facebook groups and having to have them even though I really can't afford them. I think lots are the way to go but they really don't show up all that often and I'm wondering how long it will really take to collect every disc. Especially when it comes down to the ultra rare Aloha Conference and Avon discs, then there are those that were never released and are even harder to come by like the blackwater discs. Where do you draw the line? When does it end? As for space, also something I have very little of. Your looking at $200-$300 for a good shelf and it takes 2 or 3 of them to hold every disc. I barely have room for the 1 shelf I do have and it's full, discs are overflowing onto the floor. What do I do? I would hate to start selling off discs only to change my mind on one or worse yet decide to start collecting them all again and have to start all over. Well I've droned on long enough. Thanks again. |

Here are my answers to the survey:
My first big CED score was back in November, 2009, when I bought my first CED player from an Ebay auction which came with about 20 discs.
I am a bit of a purist, so my favourite player is the RCA SFT100W.
Currently, I am up to about 400 CEDs, and I am not really interested in collecting them all; I just like to look for good deals whenever they come up & buy them whenever they are for sale locally.
I think we should donate all of the On Golden Pond CEDs to thrift stores in our communities; maybe someone will find them & become interested in the CED format.
I would pay any asking price for A Walk Through The Universe, but if I knew that someone else is interested in it, then I would just let them have it.
Last year, I paid $100.00 for an old RCA CED cardboard box which contained RCA 1984 Video Systems & RCA Selectavision Videodisc Stereo/Mono Service Alignment Disc. Earlier this year I bought an elderly woman's entire CED collection for $350.00 which had a few discs listed as "very rare" in the CED title database. |

I found my first (and every CED player I've ever owned) player at a local thrift store. Having a weakness for any type of obsolete entertainment technology I picked it up. I was not a complete stranger to the format. I do recall the era when the machines and discs were being offered by video rental places.
It was the concept of movies playing back via a needle that fascinated me. It just seemed like sucn an incredibly impractical delivery system that I fell in love with it.
I've probably had 5 or so machines in all, but have sold extras that I've had.
My biggest score of discs was from a Goodwill store. I don't recall how many I bought, but they had a bunch of them. I've never paid more than the $1 to $3 range for discs.
Because I've downsized from a large home to a small condo since beginning my CED collecting I've actually considered getting rid of it all at certain times. But then I file through my discs and play a couple of movies and I'm hooked again. I'm not actively seeking out discs these days because of space issues, but if I see some at the thrift store and see if there is anyhting I just can't pass up.
My latest purchase was the 2 disc set of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I had one disc of the set for years and was happy to finally find the full movie.
I think my favorite player is the one currently not working, my RCA SJT 200. I like the little feature where it pulls the disc into the player. Hardly necessary, but a fun little option.
As far as discs, I probably have 100+ and would not be interested in increasing that amount much. I would like to get rid of some of the titles I know I have no interest in to give myself room for more of what I like.
I've found we are a somewhat rare group of enthusiasts. I've found its hard to even give away CED movies for free. |

My biggest score was 700+ CEDs for $200.
I'm like 'krbsforty' as far as my favorite player, RCA SGT100. However I really like the Hitachis/clones as well. But I use an RCA SGT200 and 250 the most.
Maybe someday when we stop moving around all the time I will consider trying to collect them all. But not at this time. I've had upwards of 1200 titles, now I'm sitting on about 800.
On Golden Pond..lol. Actually the most dupped movie I've collected is the 'Rocky' series and An Officer and A Gentleman.
I would probably pay more for Zombie than I would A Walk Through The Universe.
The most expensive movies I have ever bought are a pair of movies for $10.($5 a piece) Although I bid on a small collection the other day that contained Zombie and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and bid $78.00.(didn't win it) : ( _________________ The Reason A Dog Has So Many Friends, He Wags His Tail Instead Of His Tongue. |

Hello Everybody!
New to the forum, have been lurking for a little while. I stumbled across this site while researching the CED format after seeing a listing on my local Craigslist. I bought the player with discs.
That was and is my only score as of yet. Toshiba VP100 with 60+ movies.
I don't know what my favorite player is because I only have the one.
I have no On Golden Pond discs
Not familiar with A Walk Through the Universe, but will research
The most expensive disc would be the only other one I have bought at a flea market, Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Arc at $10
I hope to expand my collection of CEDs and also, thanks to CED Magic, when my player quit working a couple of days after getting it, I found that it had the Toshiba belt issue. I plan on getting the grooved pulley if this continues to be an issue, but so far, about a week into putting it back on it has done fine. I think transport from the seller's house to mine may be partially to blame.
You all seem like a nice group of people and hope that I can fit in here. Thanks for the opportunity to be part of this community, I've already learned a lot. _________________ "We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone." Ronald Reagan |

| Welcome to the group, always glad to have new interest in the media. Sounds like a great score. I'm sorry to hear you paid so much for Indiana Jones but I guess it's not a big deal. If your interested in buying more discs I have a little over 300 extras that I would be happy to sell. So just out of curiosity what inspired you to go but the Craigslist lot? What did you think when you first found out what CED's were? |

Thanks, I bought the craigslist lot because I love vintage electronics and 80's pop culture, so this is just a culmination of both of those. I thought the idea of getting a moving image and sound from something similiar to a record was
really cool and had to see this for myself. ketonic_dude, Do you have the extras listed for individual sale or as a lot? Are they listed on the forum under the For Sale Sticky? I would be interested in expanding my collection. I've checked the local flea markets, second hand stores, record shops, pawn shops, and thrift stores within about a 20 mile radius of myself, as well as checking craigslist for other listings close but to no avail, and I hate using Ebay. _________________ "We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone." Hear are my answers:
1) I haven't made a "big CED score" yet. I bought the majority of my discs new back in the days when you could do that.
2) My favorite player is my Sears Hitachi 934.54780150 that I bought new in 1983. It is not my workhorse player as an RCA SJT-200 player is. The 934 has had new belts installed this year and has a nearly new stylus.
3)I have 130 discs and I am not trying to collect all of them.
4) I don't have a copy of OGP so I don't worry about it.
5) An arm, a leg and/or both eyeteeth.
6) The title of most expensive discs is shared by the following, all double diskers:
Being There
Friendly Persuasion
Greystoke, the Legend of Tarzan
Return of the Jedi
The Right Stuff
White Knights
I bought all of them as new CED's at the cost of $29.95 each back in the early 1980's. Consequently, they are like new as they have been played less than 5 times each. _________________ Sears 934-54780150 & 934.54810350,

krbsforty, I was reading your post and you said you got a CED Box with service discs in it? I'm very curious what it looks like, any way you can post pics or email me one? I get excited over CED stuff that I have never seen before. I still haven't stumbled upon any service discs myself yet but hopefully someday.
brandonmechaman, if you want to email me at ketonic_dude@hotmail.com I can send you a list of all the extras I have. I'd sell them real cheap because like a lot of people will tell you on here, you can hardley even give these things away locally. I'm up to almost 1200 titles in my personal collection and the 300 plus duplicates so I'd like to clear out as much space as possible for new discs. Thanks. |
